The Stellenbosch Business School proudly celebrates the remarkable achievement of Vitumbiko Mumba, an alumnus who has been appointed as Malawi’s Minister of Labour. Minister Mumba’s journey reflects the transformative power of leadership, education and ethical values in shaping impactful careers.
Minister Mumba recalls how his early experiences in northern Malawi inspired his ambition for public service. “In 2000, during my time at Phwezi Boys Secondary School, I met top politicians in the region. This sparked my political leadership ambitions, which were further refined through my academic and professional experiences,” he shares.
Mumba’s decision to pursue an MBA at Stellenbosch Business School was driven by its strong focus on leadership development. After encountering the leadership principles during a Senior Management Development Programme (SMDP) in Namibia, he chose the Business School over other offers.
“Stellenbosch Business School’s MBA reshaped my thought process, and even my wife noticed the change. The programme’s leadership modules, such as the VISA Personal Leadership Style and Critical Leadership Event Reviews, taught me the importance of ethical leadership. These lessons have profoundly shaped my personal and professional journey,” says Minister Mumba.
He emphasises the enduring impact of his experience: “My thesis on ethics reflects my passion for ethical leadership. Stellenbosch Business School taught me that empowering others and leading ethically creates sustainable impact, a principle I carry into my political career.” Pursuing a PhD in ethical leadership
In 2025, Minister Mumba plans to advance his academic journey by pursuing a PhD at Stellenbosch Business School. His research will focus on ethical political leadership, with potential topics addressing challenges and solutions for Malawi’s leadership landscape.
“I strongly believe that solving Malawi’s socioeconomic problems depends on ethical leadership. My PhD topic will reflect my commitment to finding practical solutions for my country,” he explains.
Transforming Malawi’s labour sector
As Minister of Labour, he is focused on empowering the workforce to drive economic growth. He emphasises the need for strategic autonomy and proactive problem-solving: “We cannot wait for donor funding to develop strategic plans. My priority is to work closely with ministry management to address challenges and empower Malawi’s workforce, which is the backbone of our economy.”
He sees challenges as opportunities for innovation and is determined to implement solutions that align with the ministry’s vision and mission.
Words of wisdom for fellow alumni and aspiring leaders
To alumni and students, Minister Mumba offers inspiring advice: “Leadership without personal conviction and passion is hard. Leaders must prioritise people, strive to empower others, and always uphold ethical leadership. It’s about the impact and legacy you leave, not monetary rewards.”
The Stellenbosch Business School celebrates Vitumbiko Mumba’s achievements and his dedication to ethical leadership and service. His story is an inspiration to alumni and students striving to make a difference in Africa and beyond.
