Kickin’ it at Henley
Meet the Henley Business School Africa soccer team, expertly guided by Head Coach Mothibedi Mabitle and Assistant Coach Bongani Maphikana. This squad is a well-coordinated formation, uniting staff from every department as well as from the Cleaning Company, one of Henley’s suppliers, who all work together to score big on and off the pitch!
What began as a casual kickabout during lunch breaks has evolved into a vibrant community where colleagues bond over goals and shared victories. Founded a few years ago by a group of staff members with a passion for soccer, Henley Africa’s soccer team – a diverse group of players drawn from across Henley, including from the Cleaning Company, a key supplier to Henley – contributes to the spirit of the school.
The aim has always been to foster camaraderie and provide a fun outlet for relaxation beyond their daily responsibilities, says team member Gcisa Vaphi, whose day job is as the CRM Coordinator in the marketing department.
The Henley Business School soccer team embodies more than just athletic competition; it serves as a platform for relaxation, friendship, and extending the Henley brand beyond the classroom, billboards, boardrooms, and online marketing.
“Whether we are on the field or cheering from the stands, we always stand together united in both our professional and personal pursuits,” says Head Coach Mothibedi Mabitle.
The team last participated in a league season two years ago and has since shifted its focus to friendly matches against other institutions and corporate teams. These games help strengthen internal relationships while also creating opportunities to connect with other business schools and corporate partners. Through these interactions, the team continues to promote the collaborative spirit of Henley Business School proudly.
And there’s no risk of them hanging up their boots just yet. The Henley Soccer Team continues to go from strength to strength and the team members have just announced their plans to register for a new league season next year featuring a diverse array of corporate teams. With matches scheduled twice a week, this tournament will not only test their competitive mettle but also allow them to continue building meaningful relationships with fellow organisations.
Henley Business School has also been cheering for the team beyond the stands by providing support in terms of funding and resources.
“In today’s fast-paced and often competitive business world, it’s essential to cultivate a workplace culture that fosters cameradie, teamwork, and a sense of belonging,” says dean and director of Henley Business School Africa, Jon Foster-Pedley. “Sport, whether within or between organisations, provides a unique platform for individuals to connect, challenge themselves, and celebrate shared victories. Ultimately, sport serves as a powerful tool for building stronger, more cohesive, and engaged organisations, and we’re delighted to be able to contribute to developing the Henley soccer team.”
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Henley Business School for their unwavering support, including sponsorship of our kits and transport for games. This backing has significantly enriched our journey as a team,” says Assistant Coach Bongani Maphikana. “A special thanks goes to Nombuyiselo Dyantyi, a programme manager in Executive Education, who has been a constant supporter since our inception.
“Together, we are not just a soccer team; we are a community committed to excellence on and off the field!”
