Creating a lasting impact at work, and in our communities

by Tracy Greenwood
Henley PGDip grad and current MBA student Pirtunia Mkhabela is fuelled by her commitment to empower women and children in poor communities – like the one in which she was born.

Pirtunia Mkhabela is no stranger to lifelong learning, nor is she a stranger to Henley. After tucking a PGDip firmly under her belt in 2020, she set her sights on the school’s MBA and is currently deeply immersed in the programme.

"I chose Henley for my business education because of the school’s quadruple accreditation and because it’s the only truly international MBA offered in SA. The programme’s flexibility appealed to me as it allowed me to juggle my work commitments, motherhood and life," she says. "Moreover, Henley’s purpose to build the people who build the businesses that drive Africa's growth resonates deeply with me. One of the main reasons I am doing my MBA is because I want to equip myself with the knowledge and tools to drive meaningful change and empower communities to build a more equitable and sustainable future for all."

Hitting the books again after such a long time spent working was a bit of an adjustment and required juggling her roles as a working woman, a mother, and a student. "Thank goodness the Henley faculty are so supportive! That greatly enhanced my experience and made the journey all the more fulfilling."

A skilled and experienced Human Resources professional – the last time she studied was to get her BA Honours degree in Industrial Psychology from North-West University in 2006 – Pirtunia made the move from HR to Corporate Affairs in 2014 because of her desire to make a meaningful contribution to those living in poor communities and to help empower Africa’s women and children.

The eldest of seven children born to a diesel mechanic father and stay-at-home mom in the village of Marite, in Mpumalanga, Pirtunia spent her childhood in the Vaal region and completed matric at Vaal Park High before enrolling for undergraduate studies.

"As a child, I always dreamed of being a performer. This was fuelled by my love of the stage and my talent for singing and public speaking," she says. "Influenced by my father, I also developed an interest in mechanical engineering, but ultimately my passion for language and connecting with people guided me toward a Humanities degree and paved the way for a people-focused career."

In her current role as Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability manager at Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa, Pirtunia is able to bring all of these skills to bear to help advance the company’s purpose – to refresh the country and make it a better place.

"Seeing young people graduate thanks to the support CCBSA has provided, or a mother being able to put food on the table because her business has become sustainable through our assistance, is incredibly rewarding. I take pride in directing investments to where they are most needed, especially in disadvantaged communities, and towards promoting economic inclusion."

Her Henley studies have added a whole new layer to her work, she says, not just in terms of academic knowledge but in the realms of personal growth and leadership development. "My studies have equipped me with a solid foundation in key business principles and leadership skills, and have broadened my understanding of strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making, which I apply in my role every day."

Looking ahead, Pirtunia remains committed to driving positive change in South Africa and the broader continent. "My goals include expanding my reach and impact on the empowerment of Africa’s women and young people by forging strategic partnerships and advocating for policies that promote fairness and equity. I believe that continuous learning and personal growth are crucial for achieving excellence and making a significant impact, especially as I complete my MBA. The journey to personal growth and impact continues …"

Pirtunia at a glance

  • In my spare time I love being with my family, immersing myself in a good romantic novel, and listening to music. I also appreciate the outdoors, whether it is for relaxation or a refreshing change of scenery and exploring new places and cultures.
  • One of the last books I read is The Power of Habit – Why We do What We Do and How to Change by Charles Duhigg, which gave me practical insights into how habits shape our behaviours and how small changes can lead to significant transformation.
  • If I could advise my 20-year-old self I would tell her to trust the process and be patient because it’s OK to not have everything figured out right away. I would also tell her to concentrate on building a solid foundation of skills and knowledge but also to prioritise self-care because you cannot pour anything from an empty cup.
