2021 Global Governance Summit


The pandemic on a global scale has given us a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come together and change our perspectives on global topics such as the economy, the environment, and society, amongst others. Indeed, governance at a global, regional, and local level has a direct influence on the direction that policy takes in each of these key areas. However, as global vaccination programmes move into full swing across the globe, do we run the risk of slipping back into the old routine?

This summit is hosted by AACSB International and co-organised with the South African Business School Association (SABSA), the Good Governance Academy (GGA) and Chartered ABS (Chartered Association of Business Schools - UK).

  • Describe what good governance looks like through the lens of key stakeholders
  • Identify the role of stakeholders in driving forward change in governance

Instilling activism into governance

As long-term advocates of societal change and the thorns in the side of many governments and corporate organisations, activists have had many triumphs throughout the years, from ending apartheid in South Africa to the suffragette movement for women’s equal voting rights. In this track we will look at:

  • How positive activism can contribute to global change when it comes to governance
  • Where activists should be focusing their energy to have the highest level of impact
  • How can they make their alternative ideas for positive change more mainstream in today’s individualistic society.

Corporate governance driving positive societal change

Whilst a free market economy inherently implies that the corporate sector can and should be able to move and pivot in its own desired direction, it also have a common duty: as contributors to financial stability, driving growth, and incubators of innovation in the wide-reaching society. In this track we will consider:

  • How companies should be fostering good governance from within their organisations and leveraging their global influence externally as part of the global corporate ecosystem to ensure sustainable governance.
  • What their role should be at the decision-making table
  • How willing the corporate sector is to commit to this change
  • How change should be incentivized on a global, not just a national, scale

Changing the governance status quo: mindsets, behaviours, and worldviews

Global governance is itself governed by an intricate web of collective social norms, institutions, and ideas. But what happens when the cogs that keep this delicate yet complex global system turning over become stuck, or, when the cogs in the various governance sub-systems stop aligning? Does this sound familiar? Changing the global governance structure implies not only aligning and unifying global goals and aims, but also engendering a new mindset in those which drive forth the institutions that make up this system. While we will barely even scratch the surface of such a colossal topic, in this track we will look at:

  • What are the drivers and trends of governance transformation?
  • Where is change most required and what evidence do we have that it is needed?
  • Evolution or revolution, where do we start?

Business schools shaping the future of governance through business education

Though history is known for being cyclical in nature, dwelling too much on the past can stagnate societal progress. In this track focused on the links between governance and business education we will discuss:

  • The role of business schools in shaping the future of governance
  • Some of the changes that we may need to make in business education to ensure that our future leaders are capable of taking society down a path which is sustainable, globally focused and prosperous for all.
  • The indicators and milestones that business schools need to consider looking at the present and into the future to drive positive change in governance.
