GIBS recognised as no. 1 business school by Top500

The University of Pretoria's Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) has been ranked Number 1 in the Business Schools Sector by South Africa's Top500 Best Managed Companies.

Top500 is an annual B2B publication that identifies and benchmarks companies that achieve the highest success level. This year marks the 11th edition of the awards, with over 4000 companies surveyed across 100 business sectors. The Topco Research Unit closely monitors business performance annually and ranks organisations based on financial growth, empowerment status, company policies, and accreditation.

"We are honoured to receive this recognition, especially given the difficult business conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic, experienced not only by the School, but also by our students and corporate clients. This is, I believe, a testament to our efforts as a leading African business school to inspire exceptional performance in our pursuit to make business healthier," said GIBS interim dean, Dr Morris Mthombeni.

The Top500 research methodology was created in collaboration with the Development Policy Research Unit at the University of Cape Town and looks at the following indicators:

  • Financial growth: four metrics of financial growth are used: turnover, rate of turnover growth, rand turnover growth, and turnover per employee. These speak to the notion of businesses as growing and productive institutions.
  • Empowerment status examines the critical position of diversity and social change. Measures in this field include a company's dedication to the transformation mission, as shown by their workforce profiles, specifically the percentages of female and black workers at executive levels.
  • The remainder of the score is accounted for by policy and accreditation, which assesses a company's participation in CSI activities. This looks at written policies on workplace diversity, capacity growth, health and safety, HIV/AIDS, and environmental issues. Commitment to quality is the final criterion in this sphere.

"In pursuit of our mission to provide high-quality business and management education, we strive to achieve standards commensurate with the world’s leading business schools. We drive excellence in everything we do. This award is a fitting commendation of the efforts of the GIBS’ faculty and management team in this regard, " added Mthombeni.
