UFS Business School
The UFS Business School was established in 1999 with the first intake of MBA students in July 1999.

Vision: To be one of the top 10 schools of management in South Africa.

Mission: Our task is the empowerment of management leaders who wish to be equipped with relevant and applicable management as well as leadership skills by a leading, quality-oriented smaller South African school of management. By means of a client-oriented focus we offer accredited certificate, diploma, degree and short learning programmes and are especially known as leaders in the field of recognition of prior learning.

In the performance of this task, leading national and international lecturers are used to develop management leaders to the meaningful integration of management theory and practice by means of residential delivery. In addition, existing national and international co-operation agreements are utilised to the advantage of our clients as well as that of international partners.

Our relevance for management empowerment in the Africa management environment is rounded off further by continuous professional management and leadership development.

MBA Overview

UFS Business School MBA

A focus on niche markets where South Africa's management needs are the greatest, combined with a curriculum designed in collaboration with one of the best business schools in the USA. These are just two of the reasons why the MBA programme of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of the Free State can be considered as a career investment.

Our aim is to train and develop skilled high-level managers in the field of general management, whilst also providing a new generation of innovative managers in those fields where expertise is in short supply.

Graduates of the MBA programme will be able to compete in both the domestic and global economy.

Mode of delivery

A part-time MBA is offered with a contact mode of delivery.

After completion of the MBA programme the graduate will be equipped to:

  1. Demonstrate a broad, specialised understanding of general management and the business/management environment.
  2. Demonstrate a specialised understanding of the interaction between operational and strategic management.
  3. Identify and solve problems on an executive level, demonstrating critical and creative thinking.
  4. Apply the general (compulsory) management skills in various contexts.
  5. Appraise and integrate management issues from the various knowledge fields.
  6. Integrate and apply knowledge and work experience by means of a field study and an applied research output in the form of a mini-dissertation.

UFS Business School MBA

The course content of the UFS Business School MBA enhances and develops managers and leaders, broadly covering all aspects and challenges that managers and leaders might face in today's ever changing business environment.

The curriculum consists of 15 core modules, electives up to 20 credits and a compulsory Research Project. Students must obtain 221 credits to qualify for the degree.

  • Age range: The majority of the MBA students are in the age range of 31-40 years.
  • Percentage of women: 25% of enrolments are women.
  • Regions of origin: The majority of the on campus student body is from the Free State, the whole of South Africa as well as International Students.
  • Average work experience: 5-10 years
Facilities & Resources
The UFS Business School offers excellent facilities referring to lecture halls, library facilities and computer facilities. The School assists students to find accommodation on campus or close to the campus.
Admission Requirements

UFS Business School MBA

Entrance requirements:

  • At least 25 years of age
  • At least 3 years of relevant managerial experience/word experience.

And one of the following:

  • A four year applicable Bachelor's degree
  • A Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (NQF level 8)
  • An applicable Honours degree
  • A RPL process (candidates admitted according to a RPL process cannot be more than 10% per intake).

Selection test consists of the following:

  • A battery of psychometric assessments.

A new group of students commence their studies in January and July of every year. Applications for the January intake close on 20 September and for the July intake 20 April each year.

Centre for Business Dynamics

The School introduced the Centre for Business Dynamics at the beginning of 2004. The general objectives of the Centre include the following:

  • To help companies and individuals stay competitive by bridging the gap between existing skills and competencies, and what is required.
  • To help the business sector to face the challenges of radical innovation and change by making their human capital and business models revolution-ready.
  • To assist young entrepreneurs to develop a range of competencies and enhance their ability to achieve success in business.
